DescriptionThe ClearSat-15 is an SVP-specification drifter with on-board GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation to provide accurate locations (typically within 20 meters) anywhere in the world on a schedule meeting the user's needs. The Argos system* reliably collects the user's data and can provide them to the user in a number of convenient formats including e-mail. A rugged ABS spherical float protects a ClearSat-2.0 Argos PTT, Rockwell Jupiter GPS engine (tracks as many as 12 GPS satellites), Argos and GPS antennas, and an ample power supply. The user may select to update GPS positions every 0.5, 1, 6, 12, or 24 hours. The Argos message reports GPS data (year, month, day, hh:mm:ss, latitude and longitude) to accuracies of +/- 1 second and +/- 0.0001 degree. As many as seventeen previous GPS positions are transmitted in four 256-bit Argos messages which can be decoded using Parse software (IBM-PC compatible). Although the buoy profile is quite low at the sea surface (approximately 20 cm.), extensive use of this equipment in oceanographic research verifies that Argos transmissions and GPS operate with high reliability. Operation is initiated by removing a magnet from the the outside of the hull. Alkaline batteries can power the unit in continuous operation mode for about one year. Standard instrumentation includes sea surface temperature, drogue presence and battery level. Other options are available.
